I read something on a blog once that really stuck with me. A mom of two was talking about various elements of motherhood, and said that while she always loved her children so much, once they started talking, it really broke her heart open in a new and wonderful way. Then a few weeks ago I read this sweet article about a mother who records her son speaking, so she has can cherish those memories forever, the way most people cherish photographs. Now that Georgie is really starting to speak – as in communicate and observe and chat instead of just babble and say the odd word here and there – I totally get it.
The way Georgie says certain words or phrases is adorable. It feels almost like a drug to me, which I completely understand sounds crazy, but sometimes it just gives me such an instant thrill, and fills me with this warm, giddy happiness. Here are a few of my absolute favorites:
What Georgie Says
-The other day, we were video chatting with my sister Nicki, who said to Georgie, ‘I miss you’ and without skipping a beat, Georgie said back to her ‘I miss you’ so clearly and so sweetly, I almost dropped the phone.
-As an addendum to the above, we were video chatting with Tom yesterday (he is away on a business trip) and as we were hanging up, Georgie said to him (with no coaxing from me), ‘I miss you.’ That time I actually did drop the phone 🙂
-Every single word Georgie says, she first puts ‘a’ in front of, which I just adore.
-A lot of her words have an ‘ie’ on the end, like snackie and froggie and piggie and sockie and shoesie. I realize this is because of the way I have said the words to her, but it’s so cute I have no plans to correct her anytime soon.
-Her current favorite word to repeat is ‘a toeeeessssss’ which she says when she is in her highchair and puts her toes on the table, when she is getting her shoes on, when she’s in her crib or sometimes when we are out and about and she’s walking, she will just stop and look down at her feet and say it.
-Her second current favorite work is ‘a skyyyyyyyyyy’ which she says over and over again when we are out on walks or in the car.
-Georgie is an emotionally attuned little toddler, and anytime she hears someone crying she looks at me with worried eyes and says ‘a cwies’ (cries) and I have to assure her that whoever is crying will be ok!
-Sometimes she will pull a pillow or blanket down from the couch, lie on it and say either ‘I sleepy’ or ‘night night.’ Sometimes she actually is sleepy, and other times I think she does it just because she knows how precious it is.
-She calls her beloved blanket that was knit by my mom, her ‘a balankeeeeeey’ and it makes her so happy.
-She loves to say ‘a pumpkin’ and the other day while walking past our neighbors house (they have great Halloween decorations out front, including a ghost, pumpkins, and a witch) Georgie said, ‘a pumpkin’ quickly followed by ‘spooookkkyyyyy,’ a word that I did not teach her!
-We recently got some play doh as a gift from a preschool open house, and she will bring it over to me and say, ‘a plaaaayyyy doh,’ putting her mouth into the cutest exaggerated ‘o’ at the end of the word.
-On the food front, my favorites are ‘a blueblee’ which is blueberry, and ‘a dilla’ which is quesadilla, her favorite meal these days.
Here she is looking up at ‘a skyyyyyy’
‘I also take pictures of him (and when he cooperates, video — that way I get the sound and the picture). And like other parents, I strain to capture just the right angle, trying time and again to get the perfect picture of his smile. But it’s different with how he speaks. Words are everything to me, and I want to record his words exactly as he speaks them. They need no embellishment or curation.’
