A Nighttime Trick to Make Mornings Easier

Rex has been going through a phase where he is extra clingy to me in the mornings. As in, if I try and put him down he will cry, attach himself to my leg and just shuffle along as I try to walk around the kitchen and get anything done, like pouring him his morning milk.

I realize ‘pouring morning milk’ sounds like a simple task, but collecting all pieces of his cup from the drying rack, putting them together, pouring the milk in and then making sure the top is twisted on tight enough to not leak is nearly impossible with a wiggly toddler in your arms. It’s a slightly frazzled way to get your day started!

So the other night, before I went up to bed, I poured Rex’s morning milk and left it in the fridge. It made my life so. much. easier. the next morning. I then took it a step further and decided to do it for ALL of his milks. So now, before heading upstairs for bed each night, I pour Rex’s morning, pre-afternoon nap and nighttime milk and pop them in the fridge. It’s such a small thing, but it has been so impactful. Anything to make life a little easier, and to have more available, open arms for Rex’s early morning clinginess.

Sibling Relationships: Georgie (4.5 years) and Rex (16 months)

When Rex was around six months old, we were at the pediatrician for a check up, and I mentioned how since he had started to really be able to move around the dynamic between him and his sister had changed. The doctor laughed and told me what her daughter said in retrospect about her younger brother: ‘First they’re boring, then they’re annoying, then they’re fun.’ So far, it has rung very true!!

During the first few months of Rex’s life, Georgie mostly adored him and doted on him and always wanted him included, and basically acted as a little mini mom to him. She would mimic the things I would say to him, pat his back to burp him, and bring him toys and teethers to play with. She thought he was cute, not a threat, and also most of the time sort of boring. She wanted him around which was sweet, but then would sometimes forget he was there. He just laid there looking around with big eyes, slept a lot, and went through a lot of diapers.

Once he started really moving around and Georgie realized that her toys were in danger of being grabbed by his chubby little hands and then immediately drooled on and chewed on, her guard went up a little. Suddenly, she would start to panic when Rex crawled her way, and she started to amass a collection of her favorite toys high up on our kitchen counter where he could never reach them.

Now that Rex is really getting a personality, they also play together which is heart melting. They love to wrestle (hilarious), run around outside, splash in the water table, and Georgie loves to tickle Rex until he lets out that precious little toddler giggle.

I have two older brothers and a younger sister – I know how amazing and incredible and special and unique sibling relationships are, and I’m so glad Georgie and Rex have each other.

Three Great Things

Here are a few things I’m into these warm-weather days:

Contigo Iced Coffee Tumbler // If you love iced coffee like I do, then I highly recommend you shell out $14 for this tumbler. Normally I fill a cup or tumbler with ice, coffee, milk and sugar and then try unsuccessfully to get it properly mixed in. My first sip usually includes a large clump of brown sugar that has settled to the bottom. Not refreshing.

With this tumbler, after you put everything in and twist the top on, you turn it totally upside down and shake it to get everything all mixed in. It doesn’t spill or leak! At all!! And everything actually mixes together! Then you pop the straw in and sip away. What a genius invention.

Parenthood // A few months ago while Tom was away on a business trip, I decided to get myself into a new show, and for whatever reason Parenthood came to mind. Oh boy did I love it. I am about a decade late, but the show completely holds true no matter when you watch it. It’s such a beautiful slice of life. I also love the New York Magazine recaps of each episode.

Poncho Towels // There is that awkward 15 or so minute stretch post-bath where you want your kids to dry off and enjoy a little diaper-less time, but being totally naked makes them too cold. I love hooded towels but they immediately fall off, and bathrobes are very adorable too, but they also have a tendency to come untied and slip off. I recently found these poncho towels and they are the answer to all of my bathtime prayers!

They are so soft, come in great patterns, and they serve the purpose of staying put, and keeping Georgie and Rex cozy until it’s time for pajamas. Rex has this one and Georgie has this one. It’s become my go-to baby gift, and I also love the brand’s storage bins, which are all over our house.
