Georgie has been a good sleeper for most of her little life. A few months ago we dropped her afternoon nap, which although slightly heartbreaking (I loved having a mid-day break!) was so the right decision. She is fast asleep by 7pm each night, and wakes up around 7/7:30am every morning. She happily chats or plays with a toy or reads a book for awhile, then starts calling for us, which we hear on the monitor and go in and get her. Recently, something different has been happening and it’s thrown me for such a loop.
It started about two weeks ago, when I woke up at 2am to the sight of Georgie standing next to my bed. It was slightly terrifying, even though she is of course tiny and adorable. Just a very startling image because she has never ever before gotten out of her bed without us going in there first! One of her little toys she brought to bed with her had dropped, and she wanted it, so I went in and got it, gave her a cuddle on her chair for a minute and put her back to sleep.
Then the other day it happened again at 5:52am. She came into our room and seemed almost drunk with confusion. ‘I’m so hungry. Is it wake up time? Can you tell me a story?‘ And again today at 5am, oof. Each time she had either a toy or book in her crib with her that had fallen out, so we are starting by taking those out when we go in and check on her before we go to sleep. I have also gone one step further and ordered this Ok to Wake Clock. I assume this is just a phase of toddler-hood – she’s almost four, she’s testing boundaries etc. – but I take sleep so seriously, I need to try my very best to nip this little issue in the bud.
