^Georgie at one month, enjoying an al fresco snack in the park
Georgina was born in the middle of the winter, and although the city was freezing cold and often covered in a slushy pile of (dirty) snow and ice, I discovered early on that getting outside together at least once a day was a necessity. It was a chance to get myself dressed and back into the world for a bit, and there was something about realizing that the city hadn’t stopped just because I had a baby that was calming in those early days. Plus, I liked giving Georgie some fresh air and had read that exposing newborns to daylight everyday is really helpful in setting their circadian rhythms and helping them understand the difference between day and night, which ultimately helps them sleep better.
When Georgie was tiny, I would take her in this wrap which was a lifesaver for many reasons. Since I was wearing her, she would be kept warm with my body heat, and since she was still in her ‘fourth trimester,’ she was getting that contact she craved. Also, since her immune system was hardly developed, having her so close to me meant strangers couldn’t get too close, and she was pretty much shielded from any germs floating around.
^A three day old, very cozy Georgie girl
Once she passed the two month mark, we would put her in her carseat on her stroller base, often lined with this cozy shearling which looked like the comfiest way to travel – babies are lucky!
At around three months we moved her into her stroller, which she hated for a few weeks, then loved once we realized she wanted to be facing out and seeing the world.
Our local park, Madison Square Park, quickly become our go-to destination, which we now often visit multiple times a day. It’s no Central Park, but since it’s so close to our apartment, it’s become our own local treasure. (Also, they have a Shake Shack.)
I can’t wait for Georgie to be big enough to swing on the swings in the playground, but for now we stroll around or sit on a bench and people watch. And after years of Tom and I heading to the park with a too-small towel for both of us to sit on, we finally purchase an actual park blanket, which is much more comfortable, especially as a family of three!
