I have a truly exciting update to share… We got a house!!! It’s in the Rivertowns in Westchester which we absolutely adore, it has a front porch and a white picket fence around the backyard, it’s walking distance to town and Georgina’s nursery school and the aqueduct and we are so, so thrilled! It’s been a bit of a process, so to now be able to say that we have a house that we love and can’t wait to move into is really such a thrilling feeling.
When we first started looking into various suburbs about two years ago, we really didn’t know what we wanted. Our basic checklist included a close commute to Manhattan, family friendly neighborhood and good school district, but there are just so many suburbs outside of the city, in New Jersey, New York & Connecticut that it felt a little overwhelming. The more we visited various places, the more we realized what we liked and what we didn’t like, and that helped a ton in whittling down the list. What also helped a ton was chatting with Suburban Jungle, a company that works with you to determine which NYC suburbs are best for your family, then connects you with the top real estate agent in that area. It’s free and it was wonderful – I highly recommend it to anyone starting the search.
The past few weeks have been a bit stressful in terms of figuring out closing dates for our apartment and the house, and finalizing the contract for the house, which went back and forth between lawyers quite a few times. I had to try my best to be patient, which is something that I have never been very good at! Once the contract was signed on Friday, we popped open a bottle of champagne and started planning which couch to buy for the living room and what color to paint Georgina’s bedroom. So, so exciting!!!
Of course, I feel pretty emotional about leaving the city. The place where Tom and I met and owned our first apartment together. The place where Georgina was born and our first home as a family of three. We love our friendly building and our cozy apartment and this amazing city, but we both feel so strongly that it’s time for our family to be somewhere with a little more space and peace and quiet. And it’s only 20 miles north of the city (you can actually see Manhattan when you’re by the river) so I am planning to be back often 🙂 If all goes as planned, we will be moving in the end of the summer. YAY 🙂
